When Art Meets Science: The Discovery of Olo

Art and science have always been intertwined, but this connection has been reinforced in my recent experience with colour theory, painting, and an extraordinary scientific discovery. What began as sketches of surf rescue boats transformed into a meditation on the nature of colour itself.

From Sketch to Exhibition

My observations at Venus Bay, capturing the interplay between the red inflatable rescue boats and the sea-green illuminated waves, evolved into a series of paintings. The composition fascinated me—horizontal lines of waves contrasted against the strong diagonal of boats running up the surf, foam splashing dramatically in front.

I developed this theme through various sizes: sketches and smaller tests up to half-sheet paintings to perfect the colours and composition. Despite struggling with worsening eyesight, the work progressed well. The culmination was a submission to the Poetry of Watercolour exhibition at VAS, which was accepted—a gratifying validation of my ongoing colour exploration.


The Olo Discovery

Just weeks after my exhibition acceptance, an announcement emerged from the United States: scientists had discovered a new colour called "Olo." This wasn't just any colour discovery—it represented a new direction in how we understand human vision and colour perception.

I first heard of the discovery on local radio where Professor Ren Ng, originally from Melbourne, was interviewed, revealing something extraordinary. Olo isn't a colour we can see in everyday circumstances. It requires precise adjustments to how our eyes' cones are activated, specifically targeting mid-wavelength cones through sophisticated machinery.

The Science Behind the Sensation

They used a machine/system known as OZ Vision, after the equipment developer. This firstly has to map those cones, the eyes colour receptors in a tiny section of retina,.  Then, micro pluses of laser beams of very specific wavelengths—corresponding closely to turquoise and greenish turquoise colours—are directed at these cones. The S (shortwavelength) and L (longwavelength) responding cones were not targeted. Resulting in the viewer seeing an intensely vivid colour that closely resembles what Oswald called his "sea green." only much brighter.

What makes Olo particularly fascinating is its demonstration that colour sensation is essentially an illusion created by energy in the form of visible light of specific wavelengths. The discovery doesn't necessarily suggest colours exist outside the boundaries of the chromaticity diagram, or outside the rainbow as widely reported, but rather reveals new possibilities for how we might experience colour. While we may not see new ways to see a broader range of colours or artificial pigments immediately, the research opens possibilities for enhanced colour experiences, perhaps fixing colour-blindness and a deeper understanding of how our brains process visual information.

The name "Olo" is a little scientific geeky: 010, zero-one-zero representing the signal pattern to different cone types—0 signal to the S cones, 1 or full signal to the M cones, and 0 signal to the L cones. This precision underscores the scientific rigour behind what might otherwise seem like an abstract artistic concept.

Art as Scientific Method

Perhaps most remarkably, this experience demonstrates how artistic practice can parallel scientific inquiry. My methodical approach to colour matching, systematic observation of natural phenomena, and documentation through sketches mirrors the scientific methods in many ways.

The artist's patient observation of colour relationships, light conditions, and natural phenomena provides a different but equally valid path to understanding. When Rob Candy gave me that Wilcox palette, neither of us could have predicted it would lead to connections between 19th-century colour theory, contemporary surf rescue training, and 21st-century vision science.

This convergence reminds us that the boundaries between art and science are often artificial. Both disciplines seek to understand and represent reality, whether through pigment and brush or laser and laboratory equipment. The discovery of Olo proves that there are still new colours to be found—not just in nature, but in the remarkable machinery of human perception itself.

Stop motion ... that moves

This animated gif produce by google+ had me a bit mystified. Waves just don't rebreak like that!
The I realised I was panning along a breaking wave with a telephoto taking this set. So the series should stack together like the series for a panorama. What has seemed to have happened is the images have been matched up on the white wash of the broken wave, setting this as a fixed point, If you look at the wave in the foreground you can see it breaking shape is moving to the left.

An Interesting Action Enhancement

An ongoing photo/art project of mine is Des Vagues, the waves, and I had taken a series of stop-motion like photos. On checking on what google+ had done in its auto awesomeness I found this kind of cute rendition of a breaking wave. I realise the photo junctions are a bit patchy but it does have life and a definite Japanese wood print feel.

Google+ action enhancements typically use a strobe like capture the movement of a person, placing them in progressive positions that map out the movement between photos. Here the wash and ripples of the breaking wave can be seen developing as the wave approaches the shore.

Venus loves gelARTo

IMGP5413After a few stumbles on the way, I’ve finally managed to hang a couple works at a Venus Bay. Peter the friendly proprietor of the gelataria at the little village on the way to beach one, has opened up an area for local artists to display (and sell) their works.

The holiday crowds may have thinned but Venus Bay is still a delightful place to relax and get a away from the hassles of life. So why not visit, have a coffee and try one of the great flavours of gelato before looking at what might inspire some of the locals.

My works are based on the local waves. The surf beach at Venus Bay runs roughly north south so with the afternoon sun behind the waves and with a light offshore wind you seen beautiful aquas and deep rich blues. If you stay till sunset you can watch the sun slip into the ocean and perhaps see the famed “stairway to heaven” (its not just a phenomena of Cable Beach & Broome)

Its been a while since I series of the Pacific Gulls, down on the beach. previously I used a series of 5 and cropped to the 4:3 format, focussed in the birds themselves. Here I am experimenting with a stronger 2:1 cropping allowing a bit more context as part of a larger picture in time.

PhotoProject :: Tiny Watery Planets

Backlit wavesToday was a light off-shore breeze and clear sky with an incoming tide late in the afternoon. I knew these where the perfect conditions to get some good images of backlit waves. The conditions where a little overcast so the rich turquoise and blues typical of late summer didn’t happen.  However I took a lot of photos!

Anyway I then had some fun turning them into little planets, polar transformed circular photos. There are a few communities of photo post processors that are dedicated to this round images and some are very precious about what makes a true “tiny planet”, and there are a few good on-line tutorials of how to do it in photoshop, even iphone and android apps, to do the polar transformations. All this doesn’t interest me that much what I wanted to do was emphasis the abstract compositional aspect of circular format. So it was back to basics. I have used a nifty transformation program called anamorph.me before, and it has a suitable polar tranform function, called cimageylindrical mirror. This is based on a transform that was used my MC Escher, and is designed such that you can put a cylindrical mirror in the center (which is why it asks for a mirror radius) and then when you look at the image reflected in the mirror you will see a normal picture (ok you have to invert it and work out how far around the mirror it needs to be wrapped). To create a full circle I have used 1 pixel as the radius (zero doesn’t work) and wrap (the angular size) the image around 359 digress (it doesn’t take 360 either). This left me was a small white sliver segment, and I used corel-photo paint cloning tool to heal that and also rotate the image into a pleasant compositional position. So here are three tiny watery planets (they will look best a little larger so don’t be afraid to click on them)

RAW Winter Skies

One thing that has been worrying me for a while has been the behavior of RAW files in Picasa. Sometime ago I had set both my Pentax and Canon EOS to store images in both the camera’s RAW and JPG format. It does use extra space and takes extra time to write both images, however I wanted to get a feel for the difference each format provided. Well a strange thing was happening. Whenever I loaded the files the .jpeg and raw files always looked the same, but after a while,  particularly if I looked at the raw file. The two images inevitably looked quiet different,even when I had not made any changes to exposure etc. At first I suspected it was something to do with the .CR2 (native Canon RAW format) and .PER (native Pentax RAW format) Codex used on the computer.Then I began to suspect that RAW files would be brighter compare with a slight underexposure of the jpeg, but there were plenty of exceptions. Lightroom 4 avoids this little conundrum because when it sees a pair of raw and jpeg photos with the same name it only “imports” (links to) the raw file.

Well the explanation, is pretty simple. Both cameras do create thumbnail of the photo, in jpeg format using the cameras default jpg processing settings and embed this inside the raw image. It is this thumbnail view that you see when you first upload your photos. Then as picasa gets a chance to process the photo further it does read the actual Raw file and does its own best attempt at processing that RAW file, making its own new jpeg thumbnail. This might be quiet different to the cameras settings. Unfortunately it is a kind of Auto-fix for all approach and often not really what you want. For example in this photo I was after a kind of moody winter sky. Tweaking the RAW files a little gave me the effect I was after, and its quiet similar to the original camera jpeg. Once you make some adjustment to the RAW file in picasa (which you now can do by the way) the thumbnail does reflect those changes.

If you look closely lightroom does a similar thing. The image displayed in library view might change once you view it or develop it and it goes through the loading… delay. After that the thumbnail you see in lightroom is what ever you do to the image with lightroom. Picasa and lightroom are both “non destructive” systems so the original raw photo file remains unchanged.

The last post


Once the site of an impressive pier to a once thriving lime kiln, only a single post now remains as a reminder that time and tide wait for no man.

It is also a reminder of how soon our heritage can be lost.

A single straight thick line at right-angles to a series of horizontal line might well be termed a "brave" composition if it where in an art piece, but I think it works well enough as a photo. Sometimes it pays to break the rules

Static Vibrancy

This screen wallpaper started out as an exercise in trying to capture things that repeat over time and then post process them using the HDRi technique into a single image (ie I was taking three photos at different exposures, then using dynamic photo to merge the images with an extended dynamic range. I expected to see the ripples moving across the image (at subtlety different exposures). The subject was the incoming tide flooding over a current cut small pool in the sand. Normally when using HDRi you must have a subject that is static across the three exposures so the images cab be matched exactly, but I like to find out what happens when you break the rules.

The individual images, showed the ripples patterns nicely, especially the +1.0 EV. (Validating my view that it is often wise to use EV bracketing when photographing low and direct light, because in those conditions the built in light meter in your camera may make the wrong decision about exposure.) The surprise was how "dynamic" and vibrant the HDR image was, even with the smooth compression (a more naturalist) tone mapping. I think this is because the image has been broken into a strong pattern of lights and darks in close proximity and your eye is constantly assessing how to interpret them. The pointillist painter realised this long before me, and made painted surfaces of tiny coloured dots trying to create this vibrancy. If you have an LCD screen try downloading the wallpaper (click on the top image and it will take you back to flickr and click on the all sizes item to get the full screen sized version).  Now look at it as you move your head around. Can you see the surface shimmer? Does the pool appear deeper?

Crystal illusion





The beach at venus bay faces west, so on a late summer evening if there is an off shore breeze the waves get a beautiful aqua transparency.
