This photomosaic was made, using autostitch, from several photos as I panned to follow a pair of pacific gulls as they began their flight.

PhotoFriday :: Selfportrait

I've been in Adelaide, so I figured using the chrome balls in Rundle Mall would make a great way to get a series of self portraits into one image. I was both right and wrong.

Taking a series of overlapping photos with myself close up to the balls I did manage to get a number of different reflections of me into the series. The "sculptures" had become quite scratched and dulled since I last saw them so my reflections are also somewhat dulled and blurred. Then I used autostitch to merge the series of photos together. Damn that process burred and ghosted me out further, because my reflection is actually in a slightly different place on each photo, So autostitch's merge of overlaps has a piece of blank ball and my reflection to overlap and the reflections are all ghosted a bit, but if you look they are still there. Oh well it sounded like a good idea at the time.

These birds followed our boat for miles. I know them as mutton birds (shearwaters) but in new calednia they are Puffinus pacificus

Another 360 panorma, I'll try to restrict to once a week. This time it is of the south bank area of melbournes. That's Flinders Street startion over the river.

anti-shake

I was out, without my tripod at night (which normally means blurred images), and thought I should give the “Shake Reduction” mechanism on my new pentax camera testing. These are both hand held, and at a around of a third of a second in low light I think the "anti-shake magic" does a good job (these are not specific before shots here, but a probably have a few hundred of those unuseableir is nothing blurred ones that are not worth looking at). The stabilization is done at the CCD and image recording level so there is nothing obviously different through the view finder, when you take the photo.

PhotoProject :: Seeking a different view

The idea for this project post comes from Project 101, a flickr group I have joined. This is called 180 degrees and tries to get you looking a one subject from differenet perspectives. Straight Up, Straight Ahead and Straight Down.


STRAIGHT UP, It is pretty inevitable that if you point the camera at the sun your will get lens flare (which you can not really judge in teh view finder, so I took a few and choose the flare that gave me the best composition)

STRAIGHT AHEAD, this a soft tree fern, its lacy texture look great in the summer light. It is part of my cretaceous garden

STRAIGHT DOWN, the interesting thing about this photo is that it is the shadows that are out of focus (don't believe me see the brick and plant at the top of the photo)

Something good for free

Ever tried to add text to a photo (most programs that come bumdled with your camera can't do that) or hide the two fingers above aunt mables head in that otherwise great family photo (again few camera bundled software has cloning tools that will help you do that). Do you find microsoft's Paint program tediously simplistic and pretty useless. Don't want to get involve with the expensive of hard to learn photo manipulation or graphics software. There is an alternative and its free


It is called Paint.net it is easy to use and you can download it for free.

It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing.
